I. INTROOUCTION
Various studies in the Brazilian Amazon mention the existence of soils having an anlhropogenic A horizon (Sombroek, 1966). These soils, often referred to as Amazonian dark earth (or Terra Preta), show particular physical and chemical properties. Their organic matter shows high stability and reactivity characteristics (Glaser el aI., 2000). The origin of this organic matter is thoughl 10 be mostly pyrogenic and is in relation to the domestic/agricullural activity of pre-Columbian populations. Because of its high fertility compared to the adjacent soils, it is been being frequently used by recent populalions of the Amazon for subsistence agriculture (beans, corn etc.) and/or for production for market safe of a high diversity of products (papaya, coconut, cupuaçu etc.). The objective of this work was to study the humic subslances with selected melhods in the anlhropogenic dark earths compared to an adjacent soil that did not have anlhropogenic A horizon.
