The version concept and mechanisms, when introduced in object oriented database systems, increase significantly the possibility of an adequate modeling of many real world situations, as in applications like CAD (Computer Aided Design), CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering), office automation and others. This paper discusses the advantages of having versions at different levels of abstraction, and how it provides a richer model and allows a more naturall representation of the reality, as well as the need for treating version mappings and associated constrains. Sets of versions associated to each level of an object hierarchy often represent a very large set of possible configurations for that object, which is difficult to be handled directly by the user. Inthis context, adequate mechanisms are very important to define and construct object configurations by means of selections applied to the set of all possible configurations defined by the combinations of versions. This paper proposes an approach to the definition and manipulation of versions and configurations, in which these two concepts are uniformly treated, as a single one. |
