This monography gives a brief description on the nutritional requirements of the caco tree and presents some of the most relevant experimental results of fertilizer use obtained in several producing countries. It reviews since the early work carried out by the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture and the Department of Agricultural of Trinidad and Tobago up to more recent research on soil fertility. Special attention is given to experiments conducted in Southern Bahia, Brazil, By CEPLAC's Cocoa Research Center (CEPEC), since 1963. Initially those experiments considered soil fertility surveys, shade x fertilization interaction and cacao responses to levels of nutrients, based on which fertilizers were of phosphate rocks and on correlation and calibration of soil test methods are referred. Results of more recent experiments on nutrient cycling in cacao agrosystems and also on selection of cacao cultivars more efficient in P-absorption and tolerant to soil acidity, are very promising in order to reduce production costs. Systems of fertilizer recommendations based on soil analysis are given, as well as both a key for recognizing symptoms of nutritional deficiencies and a series of color plants. Finally, a discussion in made on the present state of knowledge, pointing out areas of research which need more attention in the future. |
