This report shows a preliminary analysis of the relationship between RADARSAT synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and biophysical properties of the three most frequent types of pastures in the Goias State, Brazil (Cerrados ecosystem): Andropogon guyanensis, Brachiaria decumbens, and Paspalum lineari Trinins. The concept of this study is to analyze the feasibility of the C-band RADARSAT data for systematic mapping of these three types of pastures, at a regional scale (1:100,000). The study area is located in the Vao do Parana Valley, northeastern Goias State, Brazil. Two SAR images from a wet and a dry season overpasses are scheduled to be investigated. The wet season SAR scene was already acquired in February 17, 1998 (Day of Year-DOY 48), at an asceding, S5A mode (incidence angle from 63 to 42 degrees). The dry season scene will be acquired in May, 1998, with the same sensor configuration of rainy season overpass. Samples for soil moisture content were obtained from 21 sites located near the city of Flores de Goias in the DOY 48. Vegetation samples for total biomass, as well as leaf are index measurements were also obtained in the day after the wet season satellite overpass. This field campaign will be repeated for the dry season overpass. The field data will the SAR backscattering coefficients in order to analyze the potential of the C-band RADARSAT backscattering process to discriminate different types of pastures in the Brazilian Cerrados region. |
