Irrigated dryland agroecosystems could become more sustainable if crop and soil management enhanced soil organic carbon (SOC). We hypothesized that combining high inputs from cover crops with no-tillage will increase long-term SOC stocks. Caatinga shrublands had been cleared in 1972 for arable crops and palm plantations before implementing field experiments on Mango and Melon systems (established in 2009 and 2012, respectively). Each of the two experiments were managed with no-till (NT) or conventional till (CT), and three types of cover cropping, either a plant mixture of 75% (PM1) or 25% (PM2) legumes, or spontaneous vegetation (SV). The RothC model was used with a daily timestep to simulate the soil moisture dynamics and C turnover for this dry climate. Carbon inputs were between 2.62 and 5.82 Mg C ha?1 year?1 and increased the depleted SOC stocks by 0.08 to 0.56 Mg C ha?1 year?1. Scenarios of continuous biomass inputs of ca. 5 Mg C ha?1 year?1 for 60 years are likely to increase SOC stocks in the mango NT beyond the original Caatinga SOC by between 19.2 and 20.5 Mg C ha?1. Under CT similar inputs would increase SOC stocks only marginally above depletion (2.75 to 2.47 Mg C ha?1). Under melon, annual carbon inputs are slightly greater (up to 5.5 Mg C ha?1 year?1) and SOC stocks would increase on average by another 8% to 22.3 to 20.6 Mg C ha?1 under NT and by 8 Mg C ha?1 under CT. These long-term simulations show that combining NT with high quality cover crops (PM1, PM2) would exceed SOC stocks of the initial Caatinga within 20 and 25 years under irrigated melon and mango cultivation, respectively. These results present a solution to reverse prior loss of SOC by replacing CT dryland agriculture with irrigated NT plus high input cover crops agroecosystems MenosIrrigated dryland agroecosystems could become more sustainable if crop and soil management enhanced soil organic carbon (SOC). For the accomplishment of this study in the State of Acre-Western Amazonia, three approach levels were used: state, county and local (agroforest pole). The study was targeted to developing and adapting the evaluation practice and the planning of the land use, as the soil being the element of the natural resources synthesis on such a way to be associated with the traditional knowledge to obtaining the most efficient use of the land according to its agricultural or agroforest aptitude. Those actions were performed in order to reckon with a methodology that would contribute for the appropriate use of the natural resources and the maintenance of the vital functions of the ecosystems in Western Amazonia and other regions. In the main soil classes, some trenches (profiles) were opened, morphologic descriptions were accomplished and soil samples of the respective horizons were collected for the physical, chemical and mineralogical analyses. Pedologic maps were also elaborated in several scales according to the approach level and detailing need (1:250.000, 1:100.000 and 1:10.000), that in association with other thematic studies were integrated to the Geographical Information System on such way to obtaining the spatialization of the main variables and to allowing the integrated analyses of the area under study. The elaborated tool constitutes an element for searching the sustainability, where the producers, technicians and public managers transparently could make participative and democratic decisions with much higher level of success in the land use process. T study showed the possibility to integrate scales at state, county and locality levels in environmental studies that are simultaneously independent and complete each others in the sense of understanding the restrictions and the potentials of the environment. The developed methodology can also be used in other areas and territorial units, such as establishment projects, rural properties and conservation units. Though, it requires new efforts towards the accomplishment of the adaptations that are necessary to the new reality. One necessary and essential adaptation is the formation of a multidisciplinary team for developing the field work, therefore reducing the time and energy spent by the involved people, compared to the present research. The characterization of the main soil classes in different pedoenvironments in the State of Acre with the elaboration of their identification key for non- specialists users will be helpful for the better use of the natural resources and will facilitate the small farmers' actions (family agriculture), cattle farmers and the people in the forest. In addition, it is useful as subsidy for the public managers decisions at different government levels.
