This study was conducted in Santo Antonio de Posse, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, between 1989 and 1990. Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) and Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) were found on corn in all plots, planted from November 1989 to May 1990. Parasitism of eggs of S. frugiperda by Trichogramma pretiosum Riley was frequently low, and only twice more than 20% of the eggs were paratized. Parasitism of eggs of H. zea was consistently high, and generally more than 50% of those eggs were paratized. However, the high levels of parasitism were often reached when the population of H. zea was also high, and damage had already been inflicted to the silks. The parasitism was higher in single laid eggs of H. zea and lower in S. frugiperda eggs, which are laid in overlaping laping layers and protected by scales. |
