The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of developing high yielding quality protein maize (QPM) family hybrids based on full-sibs derived from CIMMYT QPM populations, that have the opaque-2 gene but normal-appearing yellow kernels. A 5x6 and 10x10 partial diallel of full-sib families plus parents were tested in four locations in Brazil. The 5x6 partial diallel consisted of early cycle flint x dent full-sibs, and the 10x10 consisted of intermediate cycle flint x dent full-sibs. The average heterosis was 33.7% and 28.2% for the early and intermediate crosses, respectively, while high parent heterosis was 60.5% for the best heterotic cross. Average ear weights of full-sib parents collected at the four locations helped in determining the feasability of using the full-sibs for hybrid production. In general, full-sib parents had more environmental interactions than the full-sib corsses. The average difference of parents and crosses had a significant interaction with environment. These results gave the opportunity to select hybrids with a broad or specific adaptation to environments. Superior families for inbred line development were detected, indicating that the objectives of developing high-yielding QPM family hybrids could be met in a short period of time. |
