Most of the plant species tested do not provide a good medium for reproduction of H. glycines. In fact, many are not penetrated. The major economic host of H. glycines is soybean (Glycine max), a plant of worldwide significance for food and other products. Other hosts os possible economic importance are bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), lespedeza (Lespedeza striata), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Crop plants that are not hosts are useful as rotation crops. Included are corn, cotton, rice, grain sorghum, peanut, sunflower, wheat, and oats. Many weed hosts are important because they may negate control practices for H. glycines. The presence of weed hosts such as hemp sesbania in rotation crops such as resistant soybean cultivars or nonhosts, including flooededrice fields, prevents levels of H. glycines from declining as expected. The knowledge od the host range of H. glycines is essentials to development of successful management strategies. |
