Low prices on the international sugar market make the export of sugar uneconomical during some years. Since it has no stable markets the brazilian sugarcane industry has, since its beginning, been subjected to alternating periods of growth and stagnation. As a result of this cuclic economy, the industry, particularly in the Northeast region, has not been able to follow the Technological development of other producing areas; this has further reduced its competitive power. Increasing oil prices and the search for renewable sources of energy have changed the outlook of the sugarcane prodution in Brazil. The policy of increasing oil prices undertaken by the organization of Petroleum Exporting countries, lead the Brazilian goverment to reduce the create the National Alcool Program in 1975, as part of a campaign to reduce the righ dependence on imported petroleum produts through the progressive use of alternative native energy sources. The main purpose of this thesis is to provide a methodology that can be used in the definition of suitable areas for expansion of the sugarcane industry an for application of improved technology.
Os preços baixos no mercado internacional de açúcar tornam a exportação de açúcar pouco rentável durante alguns anos. Por não ter mercados estáveis, a indústria brasileira de cana-de-açúcar passou, desde o início, a alternar períodos de crescimento e estagnação. Como resultado dessa economia, a indústria, particularmente na região Nordeste, não tem conseguido acompanhar o desenvolvimento tecnológico de outras áreas produtoras; isso reduziu ainda mais seu poder competitivo. O aumento dos preços do petróleo e a busca por fontes renováveis ??de energia mudaram as perspectivas da produção de cana-de-açúcar no Brasil. A política de aumento dos preços do petróleo realizada pela organização dos países exportadores de petróleo levou o governo brasileiro a reduzir a criação do Programa Nacional Álcool em 1975, como parte de uma campanha para reduzir a dependência dos produtos importados através do uso progressivo de alternativas, fontes de energia nativas. O principal objetivo desta tese é fornecer uma metodologia que possa ser usada na definição de áreas adequadas para expansão da indústria da cana-de-açúcar e para aplicação de tecnologia aprimorada.
