Methodologies for integrated access to heterogeneous distributed databases traditionally rely on the resolution of conflicts among component schemata, in order to get a conflict free global schema, where all available information is represented. This paper introduces an approach where integration is replaced by mapping, and conflict resolution is replaced by semantic relativism, supporting the complementary access to different parts of a real life entity and multiple interpretations of the stotred data. Each local schema is translated into an O-O Export Schema, were local information is represented. The global schema consists of all participant export schemata, as well as information about locally represented objects. After registering at the global schema, alocal database is allowed to start the mapping process to each selected external schema. All available information is then retrieved, following the local standards. Conflicts among data that can not be solved any mapping procedure are submitted to the user decision. |
