An important area of recent emphasis for the Feed Resources Project of the Kenya Small Ruminant Collaborative Research Support Program (SR-CRSP) has been the on-farm testing of a simplified hay baling technique for small scale farmers in western Kenya. The technique is seen as a possible way to help sustain dual-purpose goat nutritional requirements through periods of dry season feed deficits. Casual and structured field surveys were conducted at 3 sites (Hamisi, Kaimosi and Masumbi) to determine levels of farmer participation and interest in the baling trials, problems encountered and the prospects for future development. The small size of the sample (a total of 27, further divided into 16 balers and 11 non-balers on whose farms SR-CRSP dual-purpose goats had been placed), and the rather short duration of the trials, mean that the findings reported should be considered tentatively. Nevertheless, some critical issues touching on the long-term viability of the baling technique being implemented arealready raised and are summarized in this report. |
