The research and management activities within the "Brazilian Pilot Program for the Conservation of the Brazilian Rain Forest (PP-G7)", sponsored by the G states, are focusing on the last continuos tropical forest region of the world, Amazonia, especially on the Brazilian part. Considering the complex nature of the arising innovative research and management tasks, the Directorate General XII of the European Union supported the project "Interdisciplinary Research on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Amazonian Rain Forest and its Information Requirements". The objective of the project was to analyze and to develop ideas for the improvement of the frame conditions for scientific activities relevant to the aim of a sustainable use and consequently of the conservation of Amazonian ecosystems. The analysis carried out in the course of the project confirmed a strong need of cooperation within and between all domains concerned with research and development: scientists, research institutions, administration, opinion formers, decision makers, and -last but not least- the users living in the systems understudy. The crux of lacking synergism was identified to have two major aspects: the flow of information and the insufficiency of methodology for interdisciplinary research. |
