Indian Corn or maize (Zea mays) is perhaps the most completely domesticated of all field crops. The crop was seen by Columbus in Cuba on November 5, 1492 on his first voyage to America. The most likely centre of origin of corn is mexico or Central America, with a possible secondary origin in South America. Corn is adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions and is grown from latitude 58oN to 40oS and from below sea level to altitudes of 3,960 metres. |
