Carcass traits, meat quality and the difference among sire progeny groups were studied in 78 purebred 9-12-month-old Bannur lambs born to 21 sires. The lambs were slaughtered, dressed and then chilled at 2.degree.-4.degree. C for 24 hr. The percentages of trimmed retail cuts and lean were high indicating superior carcass quality. There was no significant variation among sire progeny groups in meatiness, chemical composition, instrumental and sensory qualities. In range-fed sheep significant differences in live weight and dressing percentages were found between sire progeny groups. Hence these attributes in well-managed flock would serve as reliable criteria in sire selection. |
