Vast regions with savanna ecologies in the tropical Americans are suitable for soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) production, but nodulation with introduced Bradyrhizobium is frequently poor during the first years of production. Two experiments were sown in Dec., 1985 at sites in central Brazil to determine if promiscuous soybeans capable of nodulating with indigenous Bradyrhizobium spp. in West African savanna would nodulate in soils with no previous history of soybean production. In experiment 1, 28 soybean and two cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) genotypes were sown without inoculants at four sites in a completly randomized block design. In experiment 2, nine soybean genotypes were sown with and without inoculant application at five sites. The design wasa split-plot with inoculant treatment as whole plots and genotypes as subplots. Many genotypes were site specific in their ability to nodulate with indigenous bacteria. However, TGx 813-12D, TGx 814-36D, and TGx 814-26D nodulated consistently well suggesting that varieties with genes for promiscuous nodulation could be useful to ensure successful nodulation in first-year soybean production. Even though high rates of inoculant were applied, nodulation was relatively poor at some sites, indicating the need for identification of strains capable of consistent, rapid establishment in savanna ecologies. |
