This research consists of the development of a methodology to assess agricultural potential of land for improved systems of small-scale faring. Land evaluation, hitherto a mainly physical exercise, is addressed integrally through criteria and parameters of physical and socioeconomic land suitability classifications combined in a farming systems framework. Sloping lands of medium to high natural fertility, used under low inputs by small-scale darmers in Northeast Brazil, have had inadequate evaluation and improvements in methodology are necessary to respond to environmental conditions and to the needs of agrgicultural development. Existing methods of land evaluation are too broad and fail to offer clear procedures for carrying out socioeconomic land evaluationin the context of small-scale, often marginal and poverty-ridden, farming. The current Brazilian system of land evaluation served as a basis where land suitability classes are assigned by comparing the limiting factors of land and key attributes of farming systems with requirements under an improved management level. Fieldwork was undertaken with two purposes: (1) to provide physical data required to rate the most relevant limiting factors of land specified in the methodology, and; (2) to carry out socioeconomic survey through interviews using a set of questionnaires constructed especially to collect the data required to define key attributes of farming systems. Analytical tecniques were used to determine soil characteristics and to categorise the farming...
