The Shamouti orange is a shy-bearing cultivar under subtropical conditions, especially in the early years of production. This may be associated with a general lack of adequate flowering intensitiy. Ezport market potential exists for this cultivar and increased plantings are advocated, provided methods can be developed for improving yield, particularly in young orchards. We have conducted trials in three orchards over two production seasons aimed at increasing yield by fail-applied paclobutrazol and girdling and treatments. Significant (p < 0, 05) yield increases were obtained with faliarapplied low biuret urea (two 1% sprays, one week apart, six to eight weeks pre-blossom) in a mature orchard. This was not found in a younf orchard where flower intesity waslimiting. Girdling, at full bolossom (FB) or eight weeks before FB, also resulted in increased yields where N levels were adequate. Our data indicate that N levels around 2,6% seem to be optimal for Shamouti oranges. We suggest an orchard management programme to enable Shamouti orange orchards to obtain optimal bearing capacity commencing from ayoung age udner subtropical climatic conditions. Chemical nome used: B-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-a-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-ethanol (paclobutrazol). |
