In this research, mango parts (kernel and integument) were loaded into a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix by a casting process to develop biocomposite materials. These materials should present improved mechanical and thermal properties and have the potential to be used as environmentally friendly, biodegradable food packaging material with extended shelf life. For this purpose, the research was divided into two parts: step 1, ground materials of a certain particle size from a previous work1 and step 2, which are the materials from Step 1 ground again. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser granulometry, texture tests, and thermal analysis. The difference between them was particle size distribution, impacting the materials' mechanical strength and degradation rate. Three biocomposites were made (PLA/kernel, PLA/integument, and PLA/kernel/integument) in both steps. SEM was used to observe the size distribution of the mango seed and sample morphology. In addition, resistance values increased with the addition of kernel or integument particles. Biocomposite biodegradability was also evaluated. Based on the results of this study, the biocomposites showed high mechanical properties and thermal stability, making them suitable for applications such as food packaging and structural components to help reduce environmental loads and microplastic generation. |

Abstract: Parasitism by gastrointestinal nematodes is a challenge in the production of small ruminants worldwide. It causes large productive and economic losses, mainly due to anthelmintic resistance. Natural compounds with antiparasitic activity are potential alternatives for controlling these parasites. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the biological activity of organic compounds cinnamaldehyde and citronellal in Haemonchus contortus isolates with different levels of anthelmintic resistance. For this purpose, egg hatch tests (TEO) and larval development tests (TDL) were performed in minicoprocultures. Tests were performed using the anthelmintic-resistant H. contortus isolate Kokstad (KOK), the susceptible isolate Inbred-Strain-Edinburgh (ISE) and the susceptible isolate Echevarria (ECH). The effective concentrations to inhibit 50% (EC50) and 95% (EC95) of egg hatchability and larval development were calculated. The EC50 results of the TEOs for cinnamaldehyde showed low variations between the isolates KOK (133.6 μM), ISE (142.8 μM) and ECH (133.2 μM). The same happened with the EC50 results of the TEOs for the citronellal compound (KOK 294.5 μM; ISE 308.7 μM; and ECH 350.6 μM). The CE95 for citronellal showed greater variations among the isolates studied (KOK 1,083.1 μM; ISE 3,317.3 μM and ECH 2,008.2 μM). EC50 results in TDL in minicoprocultures for cinnamaldehyde (KOK 7.396 μM; ISE 7.232 μM and ECH 6.542 μM) and citronellal (KOK 28.422 μM; ISE 28.883 μM and ECH 31.816 μM) also showed little variation among the studied isolates. However, the CE95 results (Cinamaldehyde: KOK 21.594 μM; ISE 14.115 μM and ECH 13.031 μM and Citronellal: KOK 99.284 μM; ISE 53.319 μM and ECH 81.654 μM) showed greater variation between the isolates than did the EC50 results. In general, citronellal and cinnamaldehyde showed efficacy on eggs and larvae of H. contortus isolates with different anthelmintic resistance profiles.
