In Florida, the sandy ridges of relict shorelines support two vegetation types, the scrub and the sandhill, that are strikingly different in species, composition and physiognomy. There is an abrupt ecotone between the scrub which is dominated by a closed canopy of sand pine with a dense understory of evergreen oaks and little or no herbaceous ground cover of grasses. Currently a hypothesis that combines the effects of fire and the effects of allelopathy is being investigated: Allelochemicals released from scrub plants deter the invasion of sandhill graminoids into the scrub, whereas periodic surface fires in the sandrill preempt the success of scrub invaders into the sandhill. To investigate this hypothesis, effects of water leachates from scrub species weretested on sandhill grasses. The results prompted a directed search for the allelopathic constituents of Ceratiola ericoides (Empetraceae), Conradina canescens (Lamiaceae) and Calamintha ashei (Lamiaceae) of the scrub community. |
