? Abstract: Hypothesis of this work was that the water regime can modify the plant architecture, modifying leaf elevation (?) and decreasing leaf area index (LAI) in plants cultivated under the rainfed water regime (NI) compared to the irrigated ones (IRR), which may influence the light extinction coefficient (k) which may vary during coffee growth. The objective was to calculate leaf azimuth, ?, individual leaf area (ILA), LAI and canopy k using 3D plant models of an Ethiopian coffee accession, ?E083?, considering some phenological stages. The general distribution tendency of ? was plagiophile. The NI plants formed higher average ? than the IRR ones, which may explain the tendency to avoid energy dissipation under high irradiance, since abiotic stresses were multiple. The NI plants presented much lower LAI than IRR ones, in a range of 2.5-3 times. ILA showed a steady increase among five phenophases; in IRR plants, the average ILA increased from 18.9 to 29.5 cm2, while in NI plants from 15.2 to 27.7 cm2. The increase in ILA was due to the increased number of high branching order leafy shoots, which were shaded and formed leaves of high ILA. K? for the direct radiation was higher in NI plants than IRR during fruit and leaf expansion phenophase in 2012-13. Higher k? was shown in phenophases that favored vegetative growth (leaf area and fruit expansion) than in those focused in reproductive growth (fruit maturation and harvesting). Our work showed that some morphological responses, as variations in ILA and leaf inclination, had great value for acclimation to high irradiance and low water availability.
