The understanding of biogeochemical processes is important for the definition of management practices and conservation polices of Gallery Forests. Considering the moisture variation along the topographical gradient and the differences between dry and rainy seasons, the present work had as objectives: to establish relationships between levels of seasonal moisture and cycling of nutrients, to quantify the stocks and to characterize the fluxes of nutrients in several compartments of the system and to propose functioning models for the Gallery Forest ecosystems. The experiment was established in a plot of 100 x 100 m in the Gallery Forest of the Córrego Pitoco, in the Reserva Ecologica do IBGE, OF (15°56'41"5 and 47º56'07 ' W). As experimental design, three sampling lines were established parallel to the stream, 45 m distant to each other. The lines were denominated wet community (near the stream), intermediate community and dry community (adjacent to a typical Cerrado area). The activities were distributed in 4 studies: 1. Availability of nutrients in solutions - determination of the chemical composition of the water (total organicC, Ntotal, Norganic, NH4+, NO3-, Ptotal, PO4 2-, K+,Ca2+, Mg2+, SO4 2-, Na+ and CI-) of rainfall, in three stages, before reaching the canopy (atmospheric deposition), after crossing the canopy (throughfall), after crossing the litter layer (litter leachate), and also, the chemical composition of the soil solution at 50 cm and of the stream water, 2. Production, chemical composition and decomposition of the litterfall and nutrient resorption - litterfall collection, that resulted in the calculation of annual production, the determination of the chemical composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S) of the litter, the estimate of the litter decomposition rate and the calculation of resorption rate and nutrient use efficiency 3. Mineralization of nitrogen and carbon of the microbial biomass of soils - monthly determination of soil nitrification and mineralization rates and carbon concentration associated with soil microorganisms, 4. Isotopic composition of soils and plants - determination of the isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen in soils and leaves of 15 woody species. The mean fluxes of NO3-, DOC, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and CI- in throughfall were greater than in the atmospheric deposition, indicating that these elements are being leached from the canopy. On the other hand, the fluxes of Ntotal NH4+, Norganic, Ptotal Na+ and SO4 2- were lower in throughfall than in the atmospheric deposition, indicating that these elements are being retained in the canopy. The atmospheric deposition contributes substantially to the total amount of those elements in throughfall and it seems to be important for the ecosystem Gallery Forest. The Corganic, Ntotal, NO3-, NH4+, Norganic, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and CI-fluxes in litter leachate were greater than in throughfall while Ptotal SO4 2- and Na+ fluxes were lower. The fluxes in throughfall and litter leachate were in the order: Corganic > K+ > Ca2+ > CI- > Mg2+ > Ntotal > SO4 2- > Na+ > Ptotal. In throughfall the Corganic, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and CI- fluxes in the communities were in the order: dry community > intermediate community > wet community. In litter leachate the K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ fluxes also were in the order: dry community > intermediate community > wet community and the Corganic and Ntotal fluxes were in the order: wet community > intermediate community > dry community. In the wet community, where soil Moisture is higher, the annual production of litter was smaller and the decomposition was faster than in the dry community. The woody species of the wet community presented higher resorption rates for N and S and higher nutrient use for K, Ca, Mg and S. In contrast, in the dry community the concentrations of Ca, Mg and K in leaves and litter were higher as well as the efficiency of the use for N and P. Immobilization of N and S was measured during the decomposition of the litter. The moisture gradient along the topographical gradient also influenced the biological activity of the soil, as represented by the determination of mineralization of N and C of the microbial biomass. These parameters were directly related to the variations of soil moisture being higher in the wet community. The greater values of 13C in the soils of the dry community in comparison to the wet community can be related to the contribution of organic matter with higher values of 13C. Differences in 13C in leaves of the dry community species in relation to the wet community species may be a consenquence of water stress. The woody species of the wet community presented larger values of 15N and of N in comparison to the dry community species, indicating differences in N cycling. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a oilseed crop of great economic importance drastically affected by abiotic stresses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in transcription and post-transcription regulation of gene expression, being essential molecules in the response of plants to abiotic stress. To better understand the molecular mechanisms behind the response of young oil palm plants to drought stress, this study reports on the prediction and characterization of miRNAs and their putative target genes in the apical leaf of plants subjected to 14 days of water deprivation. Then, the data from this study were compared to the data from a similar study that focused on salinity stress. Both, the drought-and salt-responsive miRNAs and their putative target genes underwent correlation analysis to identify similarities and dissimilarities among them. Among the 81 identified miRNAs, 29 are specific for oil palm, including two (egu-miR28ds and egu-miR29ds) new ones ? described for the first time. As for the expression profile, 62 miRNAs were significantly differentially expressed under drought stress, being five up-regulated (miR396e, miR159b, miR529b, egu-miR19sds, and egu-miR29ds) and 57 down-regulated. Transcription factors, such as MYBs, HOXs, and NF-Ys, were predicted as putative miRNA-target genes in oil palm under water deprivation; making them the most predominant group of such genes. Finally, the correlation analysis study revealed a group of putative target genes with similar behavior under salt and drought stresses. Those genes that are upregulated by these two abiotic stresses encode lncRNAs and proteins linked to stress tolerance, stress memory, modulation of ROS signaling, and defense response regulation to abiotic and biotic stresses. In summary, this study provides molecular evidence for the possible involvement of miRNAs in the drought stress response in oil palm. Besides, it shows that, at the molecular level, there are many similarities in the response of young oil palm plants to these two abiotic stresses.
