Conteúdo:  Average pH of Brazilian soils is circa 5.5 and in case of the 'cerrado' (around 2.0 million square kilometers) is even lower. Low Ca, Mg and K in the exchange complex is accompanied by high Al saturation. Lime use has not kept up with the increase in fertilizer consumption which is a contributing factor for further decrease in pH. Hence the interest of screening and breeding varieties of food crops with some degrees of tolerance to Al toxicity. This paper summarizes results obtained in experiments designed to differentiate among 30 cultivars each of grain sorghum and beans those less sensitive to high levels of Al in the medium, as well as to establish rapid methods for screening, and to determine relationship between aluminum effect and mineral nutrition. Care was taken to separate Al from H ion effects. Preliminary trials showed that dry matter production by seedlings grown for short periods gave better indication of Al tolerance than other parameters. Very close correlations were found to exist between radiophosphate uptake either by excised roots or intact plants and Al tolerance. Al toxicity was associated to a large degree to reduction in uptake of Ca, K, and particularly Mg in short term experiments. Al-tolerant sorghum hybrids however showed an increasing K uptake when the concentration of aluminum in the substrate was raised. Although differences do exist among cultivars, it is not thought that this characteristic fully obviates the need for use of lime.

Conteúdo:  This work aimed to evaluate the drought tolerance of transformed plants of the cultivar BRSMG Curinga that overexpress the rice phospholipase D &1(OsPLD&1) gene. The productivity of independent transformation event plants of the OsPLD&1 gene was evaluated in an experiment where 19 days of water deficit were applied at the reproductive stage, a very strict growing condition for upland rice. The non-genetically modified cultivar (NGM) under drought treatment reduced productivity by 89% compared with that under irrigated treatment, whereas transformed plants (PLD&1_E2) reduced productivity by only 41%. After the drought treatment, the PLD&1_E2 plants productivity was five times greater than that of the NGM plant. Moreover, no adverse effects on growth and development of the transgenic plants were observed. Seven days after the resumption of irrigation, PLD&1_E2 plants had higher stomatal conductance, greater photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate than did NGM plants, as well as a higher expression level of the OsPLD&1 gene. A delay in the senescence process was observed in these PLD&1_E2 plants, and this was determined for the recovery of photosynthesis, with greater expression of the Rubisco and lower expression of the SOD. This finding was suggestive of decreased oxidative stress, probably due to gas exchange by the partial closure of the stomata of these transformed plants, which prevented the formation of reactive oxygen species. OsPLD&1 gene overexpression resulted in... Mostrar Tudo
