Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore, 1957 is one of the main pests of Vigna unguiculata Walp, around Petrolina-Pernambuco. In this paper, the effect of the insect on V.unguiculata was studied under furrow irrigation. The average productivity obtained by protecting the crop from the 8th to the 76th days after germination (1.250kg/ha) was approximately 2.5 times higher than that when no protection was made (498 kg/ha). There was a gradual reduction of the values of the parameters related to pod, seed and vegetative development with reduction of the crop protection interval. Probably, crop productivity could be maintained close to the highest obtained in this experiment by ending between the 48th and 64th days. The number of pods produced by each plant seems to have been the principal factor responsable for the reduction of the productivity of V.unguiculata due to E.kraemeri infestation. |
