Not much is known about the extent of the movement of P fertilizer applied on established alfafa stands in the southeastern USA acid soils. Increasing the avilable P in deeper horizons where plant available water is less limiting during drought spells would be of great interest. Thus, in order to evaluate the extent of the movement of phosphorus in acid soil, a series of field, greenhouse and laboratory experimentswere carried out. Phosphorus and other chemical and physical properties were evaluated for different soil dephts. In addition, a new anion-exchange resin in membrane (AEM) was investigated for extracting available P. The AEM was effective in extracting P, not dependent on soilmineralogy and easily adaptable for a routine use. under field con-ditions, three P rates (0,100 and 200 kg HA-1) were applied on three established alfafa entries (Acid tolerant, Acid sensitive and Apollo). One year after P application, most of the P fertilizer was located in the upper 5 cm layer. However, appreciable amounts of P moved down from the top to the bottom of the plow layer (approximately 16 cm) inproportion to the amount of P fertilizer applied.
