Immature (1-month old) and mature(gathered from the field after harvest) wheat, oats, pea, chickpea, and lentill plants, completely dried at60oC for 2-4 days, were finely ground in a mill. A 20gsample of each crop residue was layered 2.5cm below the surface in a 20cm diameter claypot filled with 2kg of field soils. Distilled water was added in each pot to bring the moisture level to 5% w/w. Each pot was sealed in a polythene bag to prevent moisture loss and kept at room temperature for 1 month. No crop residue was added to the soil in pots used as control. After 1 month, the top 2.5cm of soil layer along with crop residue was removed, mixed thoroughly with 2 L of distilled water and left overnight at room temperature.
