An experiment to induce conception during spring and summer included 829 total dairy goats over four consecutive years. Treatments included combinations of the following: 1 or 2 removable progesterone implants (PI) placed s/c for 21 days, 2 mg estradiol-17 Beta (E2) injected IM when PI's were placed, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and/or pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) injected IM when the implants were removed. The does were exposed to bucks for estrus detection and breeding the evening of the day following implant removal and again the following morning. This treatment procedure was designed for management convenience to minimize hadling the goats and to allow completing hormone treatments of 1 trial and starting treatment of the succeeding trial on the same day. Fertility may have been decreased because of the timing of hormone treatments. Except for the PI only treatment the results of the treatments did not differ greatly and were pooled within years. The number of does in synchronized estrus overloaded the bucks and manpower which may have resulted in some fertile does not being detected or fertile bred. The results suggest that kidding rates from 20 percent to 40 percent may be expected from this type of treatment |
