In the present study, trunks were strangulated with wire at 6 tensions to define the limits below which a given wire tension can be beneficial and above which it is detrimental or lethal. Two-year-old pummelo trees grafted on trifoliate orange roootstock grown in 30-liter poots under fiield (spring, summer and autumn) and plastic house (winter) conditions were used in this trial. The ttttrunks were strangulated 5cm above the graft union with a steel wire 1.6 mm diameter, on 6 July 1991, by which time shoot growth in the first flush growth had stopped. The wire was removed on 5 February 1992. Tensions of 0, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 Kgf.cm were set by strapping along the girdle formed after pulling the wire with torque wrench. Each strrangulation treatment and control were replicated 5 times. Tree trrunks strangulated at tensions up to 40 Kgf.cm behaved similarly to the control ones, without any apparent deleterious effect on tree growth. |
