The study of alternative rootstocks to the widely utilized 'Rangpur' lime is of great concern for Brazilian citriculture nowadays. A study was conducted at Bebedouro, in the Northern of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to evaluate canopy volume, productivity, fruit quality and fruit commercial classification of 'Tahiti' lime trees budded onto eight rootstocks: 'Rubidoux', 'FCAV' and 'Flying Dragon' trifoliates; 'Sunki' tangerine; 'Cravo Limeira' and 'cravo FCAV' Rangpur limes; 'Swingle' citrumello and 'Orlando' tangelo. The experimental orchard was planted in 2001, ate 8 m x 5 m spacing, in a randomized block design, with 6 replications and 1 tree per plot. No supplementary irrigation was applied. All the trifoliate rootstocks significantly reduced tree canopy volume. However, the trees grafted onto 'Flying Dragon' showed the highest yield efficiency and lower alternation intensity. Fruit internal quality was higher among the trifoliate rootstocks evaluated in this study, with the 'Flying Dragon' producing a significant increase on packing carton size for export fruit. Thus, the 'Flying Dragon' trifoliate outstands as a promissory alternative for diversifying the local pool of rootstock cultivars for 'Tahiti' lime. |
