A literature sarch on pathogens of insects associated with soybeans, cowpea, bean, chickpea and pigeon pea reveals that at least 46 insect species are naturally attacked or susceptible to one or more entomopathogens. Control attempts have been carried out with the fungus Nomuraea rileyi, viruses, the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis and the microsporidium Vairimorpha necatrix, with the greatest amount of effort concentrated on soybean insects. There are many examples of the natural occurrence of fungal epizootics on insct populations. However, only a few control attempts on leguminous crops have been carried out with N. rileyi, which is one of the most important natural control agents of lepidopterous insects on soybeans and other crops in the Americas. Other fungi, especially Beauveria bassiana and Metarrhizium anisopliae, apparently also have potential for use against different groups of insects occurring on grain legume crops. Control attempts with commercial formulations of B. thuringiensis indicate high virulence fr some important lepidopterous insects. Viruses, especially the nuclear polyhedrosis (NPV) and granulosis viruses (GV), have been tested with success against several important Lepidoptera and have a high potential for use at the farmer level. In recent years, a substantial amount of data has been gathered on a NPV which has shown high virulence to Anticarsia gemmatalis when sprayed on soybeans. In a small scale pilot program in Brazil aiming at its use by the soybean farmer, applications of ...
