The study about bioinsecticide based on Bacillus thuringiensis began at the Food Engineering Faculty/UNICAMP in 1970, with the development of a Master Science thesis. The subject was to verify the possibility of increasing the mass production, based in the literature culture media. This work finished in 1973, but then appeared the interest in studying some different substrates to adapt the mass production to a national reality. This research permited the PhD thesis defended in 1976. These two thesis treated the obtention of the endotoxins, but after this, in 1981 another thesis, by this time to get exotoxins. This paper will treat the subject studied in eight thesis presented at UNICAMP discussing B. thuringiensis fermentative processes, culture media using diferent substrates, engineering parameters and variables studied, as well as some aspects of downstream processing. The conclusion is that Bacillus thuringiensis production in feasible technical and economically in Brazil, where a big amount of chemical insecticides is used, sometimes irrationally, to control agricultural losses and public health problems. |
