Zinc deficieny has been recognized as one of the most important micronutrient deficiencies in highly weathered soils from the humid tropics. Soil phosphate and phosphate fertilizers crops. Two sets of experiments were conducted to study the effect of P on the amount of Zn adsorbed on freshly precipitated and aged Al and Fe hydrous oxides and in soils. The main difference among the experiments, in each set, was the order which Zn and P solutions were equilibrated with hydrous oxides and soils. Specifically, the experiments were designed to study (i) the adsorption of Zn on hydrous oxides and soils, (ii) the effect of previous treatment with P on Zn adsorption on hydrous oxides and soils, and (iii) Zn adsorption on hydrous oxides from a solution containing Zn and P. The amount of Zn desorbed by 0.5 M BaC12 solution was also determined in all experiments. One experiment with soils was conducted to evaluate the effect of P on DTPA-extractable Zn. The increased Zn adsorption on freshly precipitated A1 hydrous oxide as a result of P treatment was mainly on oxide surfaces. But, the increased Zn adsorption on aged A1 hydrous oxide and on both freshly precipitated and aged Fe hydrous oxides, as a result of P treatmen, was mainly on adsorbed P. No differences were observed among the P treatments concerning the amounts of Zn desorbed by BaC12 solutions. The second study was carried out with four acid soils from Brazil and one kaolinitic soil from California. The effect of P in enhancing Zn adsorption was much greater on the Brazilian soils than on Californian soil. However, in all soils, the amounts of Zn desorbed by BaC12 solution were independent of P treatments. Phosphate did not affect the amount of Zn extracted with DTPA solutions in any of the five soils studied.
