A biodiversidade brasileira é impressionante e, por isto mesmo, conhecida no mundo todo. Este patrimônio é precioso por diversas razões, uma delas porque constitui um ponto de partida para o desenvolvimento de novos produtos e tecnologias que oferecem vantagem estratégica ao mercado. Esforços recentes apontam para o cuidado com estes recursos biológicos, seja na conservação ou na exploração biotecnológica. Isto é perceptível, por exemplo, no texto do novo marco legal da biodiversidade, Lei nº 13.123/20151 , que procura estabelecer critérios para conservação e uso sustentável desta biodiversidade. A Embrapa se destaca em seu longo histórico de desenvolvimento de produtos e tecnologias agropecuárias baseadas na pesquisa e desenvolvimento sobre a base dos recursos naturais brasileiros. Nisto se sobressaem exemplos como a pesquisa com a erva-mate, Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. A Embrapa Florestas reconheceu a importância da pesquisa desta espécie, estabelecendo materiais genéticos que são referências para a indústria. Dos programas de pesquisa com erva-mate foi reunido um valioso banco de germoplasma que representa a variabilidade genética encontrada nas diferentes populações e desenvolvidas variedades que oferecem maior rendimento em produtividade de folhas e diferencial em concentrações de compostos químicos como a cafeína. O Serviço Nacional de Proteção de Cultivares (SNPC), órgão ligado ao Departamento de Propriedade Intelectual e Tecnologia da Agropecuária (DEPTA) e pertencente ao Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento, contribuiu com sua longa experiência ao desenvolvimento de descritores florestais para fomentar, juntamente com a Embrapa e representantes do setor produtivo, uma discussão quanto às necessidades de registro e proteção de cultivares da espécie. Neste documento formalizou-se, em um trabalho de cinco anos, a colaboração da Embrapa Florestas, SNPC, Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina (Epagri) e Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), na formulação do recém-publicado ato n° 7, de 9 de maio de 20192 . Neste ato o SNPC define os descritores mínimos para fins de proteção de cultivares de erva-mate o que permite reconhecer os esforços de inovação em pesquisa de materiais. Espera-se que o presente documento ofereça uma maior compreensão dos descritores em um texto de suporte ao ato do SNPC. Desta forma, a Embrapa e parceiros respondem um pouco mais à demanda do setor produtivo e mais uma vez oferece valorização à biodiversidade brasileira.
