Phytogeographical accounts and maps of South America depict a wedge of so-called Chaco vegetation in south-west Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. A survey undertaken in the area of Corumba to Porto Murtinho revealed the presence of at least five different woody communities with varying degree of relationship with typical Chaco; the physiognomy is sometimes very similar, but with one exception, their floristic composition is quite distinct. The Diplokeleba-Tabebuia-Capparis scrublands, the Schinopsis balansae parklands and the Aspidorperma-Mimosa-cactus scrublands are transitional formations occupying low-lying areas. Their flora is related mainly to the Pantanal and cerrados with a few Chaco elements present. The Chaco forests close to Porto Murtinho, dominatedby Schinopsis balansae, are the only ones with an unmistakable chaquenian character, and apparently occur in a very small area. The more widespread Schinopsis brasiliensis-dominated calcareous woodlands on ligh, stony, mesotrophic ground, do not contain any Chaco elements, but are linked to similar formations in the Pantanal and on calcareous outcrops within the cerrados. In all likelihoodm, the dominant tree of the last community has been previously mistaken for Schinopsis quebracho-colorado, which does not occur in Brazil. Thus the Brazilian 'Chaco' area is a meeting place of two separate elements - chaquenian and mesotrophic-type forest - which scarcely mingle but rather occur as distinct woodland types. The extent of this Chaco ingression into Brazil seems likely to be far smaller than previously thought.
