The froth of the spittlebug species Deois flavopicta, Deois sp. (schach group), Mahanarva fimbriolata, and Aeneolamia selecta selecta was studied in terms of topochemical composition and macromolecular organization and compared to published data for Deois sp. (not pertaining to the schach group). The objective was to determine possible differences in composition and/or stereoarrangement of the froth among different spittlebug species, a fact to be taken into account when one intends to manage various species which may coexist in the field. The response of froth structural proteins to the topochemical methods used, as well as the general characteristics of protein stereoarrangement evaluated in terms of optical anisotropical properties, and the absence of phospholipids were found to be common to all of these species. As regards acid glycosaminoglycan (AGAG) components and calcium, however, differences were assumed for the froth of Deois flavopicta (different AGAG conformationand higher calcium concentration) compared to that of the other species. The choice of drugs and organisms for chemical and biological control of different spittlebug species, when involving disruption of their froth structure, should take these facts into consideration. |
