Samples from superficial (A) and subsuperficial (B) diagnostic horizons of 15 Brazilian soils were analysed to determine the content of uranium, thorium and niobium (on a dry weight basis) by inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrocopy (ELAN 5000, Perkin-Elmer) following digestion with "aqua regia". A rande of 1.69 to 2.018 ug/kg for uranium were obtained for the superficial (A) horizons. A range of 0.47 to 937.6 ug/kg for niobium, 3.36 to 38.080 ug/kg for thorium and 1.28 to 2.298 ug/kg for uranium were obtained for the subsuperficial (B) horizons. In general except for Nb, soil samples of the B horizon showed higher contents of Th and U than those collected from the A horizon. The Pearson correlation, coefficients (all positives) were found in the A horizons between U and Fe (P<0.001), U and Th (P<0.01) Th and Fe (P<0.01), Nb and Fe (P<0.05). In the B horizons, only the correlation between U and Fe was significant (P<0.001). |
