Thin films cast from chemically synthesized polyaniline were exposed to ionizing X-rays radiaton and characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, electrical conductivity, radiation induced conductivity and solubility measurements. Samples irradiated under vacuum or dry oxygen atmosphere did not have their electronic spectra changed (maximum wavelength at 630nm). However, under ambient or high humidity atmospheres the energy of the excitonic transition was decreased (max at approximatelly 1000nm), accompanied by a great conductivity increase up to 1S/cm. Such conductivity suffers a small decay, remaining constant at about 10E-2 S/cm for several days. Radiation induced conductivity (RIC) measurements indicated a large increase in current as a function of time for films irradiated under high relative humidity atmosphere, consistent with this phenomenon. This behavior seems to indicate that doping of polyaniline can be achieved by X-rays radiation which might be of interest for applications on lithography and microelectronics. |
