Due to environmental and resource conservation concerns, recent laws and regulations require metering of all irrigation wells in Mexico. An electronic instrument for totalizing water extraction from irrigation wells was developed. This device was a joint project between government (Instituto Mexicano de Tecnologia del Agua) and private industry (Disenos Electronicos Prodata, S.A.). Special attention was given to producing a low-cost reliable instrument with reasonable accuracy. The current version of the device can be used on free flowing wells up to 8 inches in diameter. It consists of orifice plate with a differential pressure transducer and supporting electronics. Field tests were conducted in commercial production systems. The current version of the device is tamper-proof and is expected to be commercially available at less than 60% of the cost of comparable devices currently in the market. |
