This study is an attempt to understand two aspects of the unbalanced development of Brazilian agriculture in the post-World War II period. The first aspect is the low level of agricultural productivity and the rather sluggish rate of growth of agriculture in the aggregate, in contrast to the rapid rate of productivity growth and output expansion in the industrial sector. The second aspect is the relatively rapid rate of modernization and productivity growth in the agricultural sector of Sao Paulo and environs, and the rather limited growth in productivity and modernization in the rest of Brazilian agriculture. |
