Water holding capacity (WHC) is defined as the ability of a medium to hold water controlled by its geometry and composition. Indication of methods to evaluate WHC of biochar and soil mixed with biochar are outlined. Studies involving the use of biochar applications and effects on WHC are reviewed and discussed. The feasibility of adding biochar to soil to enhance water holding capacity is still controversial not only because of non-significant effects in many soils, but also because the feedstock and the pyrolysis technique used to produce biochar and the consequences in WHC are still not completely understood. Biochar additions may be more effective to enhance plant-available water (PAW) in soil with a coarse texture. Caution is necessary in application of large amounts of biochar produced from not well-studied feedstocks or pyrolysis technique that is not produced to comply with the biochar standards or certificates, as some consequence may not be reversible. |
