Sixty-six yearling and two year old bulls which were selected for breeding in 1980 and 1981 were used to study the effects of body weight (BW) and gain on scrotal circumference (SC), libido score and semen production and their interrelationships. The results indicated that: 1. Among the variables, preweaning average daily gain had the highest association with SC, indicating that proper preweaning growth was critical as far as testicular development was concerned. 2. Body weight at the start of breeding season had a linear and positive relationship with SC. Body weight explained a larger fraction of variation in SC in yearlings compared to the two year old bulls. 3. There BW at the start of breeding season and testicular consistency particularly among the two year old bulls. The bulls with larger than average SC tended to have softer than average testes. 4. The libido score was not consistent from to year, which was perhaps due to the subjectivity of the scoring procedure and the low repeatability of the trait. |
