Over 40% of the estimated 130 x 10 8 cattle population in Brazil is found in the Cerrados (savannas), a region which covers more than 200 million hectares. Phosphorus deficiency, is by far, the most widespread and economically of long-term on-farm supplementation experiments and radio-isotope metaboliam trials have been conducted. Effectiveness of cheaper alternative phosphorus source, as tripe superphosphate has been demonstrated. Brazilian triple superphosphate (TSP) generally contains low fluorine levels very low heavy metal levels, (0,45% F DM basis) and good phosphurus levels (20-21% P DM basis). In adition, its true phosphurus digestibility, as determined by radio-isotope techniques, was not different from that obtained in dicalcium phosphate (DICAL), taken as reference standard. The response of triple superphosphate, as phosphorus source, in growing and finishing animals, was compared with dicalcium phosphate, in some long-term on-farm feeding trials. Liveweight gains on the animals receiving TSP were not significantly different from those of the animals receiving DICAL. Rib bone flurine levels remained within the normal levels at the end of the trial and no fluorosis problems were observed in the animals which received TSP. However, economic andysis of the trials, showed significant advantages for the TSP treatment groups over DICAL groups. Based on research results, two mineral mixtures containing TSP as phosphorus source and DICAL plus TSP as phosphorus sources, for grazing cattle on the cerrado region, are suggested in this paper.
