In the U.S. one speaks of the corn belt and the wheat belt, reflecting the role of those plants as the principal crop in certain areas. Agricultural systems in other parts of the world can be similarly characterized by their dominant crops. In every such area, however, other crops are grown too, sometimes in rather intricate association with the main crop. The agricultural pattern that has emerged in each areas is in part the result of ecological factors - a particular combination of climate and soil - and in part the result of economic and cultural factors in the society that grows the crops. |
