A study was made of the effect of varying amounts of urea on the digestibility of poor quality veld hay, the rate of passage of the ingesta through their digestive tracts and the nitrogen status of yearling Frisian steers. Six steers weighing on an average 540 lb were used in a 6 x 6 latin square design. The urea in the respective treatments was dissolved in water and sprayed on the chopped hay. A daily intake of not less than 24 gm of urea-nitrogen resulted in a positive nitrogen balance. The ingesta took the shortest time do past through the reticulo-rumen when 24 gm of urea-N was ingested daily. There are indications of a retarded functioning of the digestive system when more than 24 gm of urea-N was ingested per steer per day. Nearly all the nitrogen taken in over and above that required for a positive nitrogen balance, was excreted in the urine. The digestibility of the dry matter, NFE, ether extract and crude fibre was not influenced appreciably by the ingestion of urea. |
