The genetic characterization of Pantaneiro cattle populations was based on protein polymorphisms of the Hemoglobin, Carbonic Anhydrase, Peptidase-B, Amylase-I. Transferrin and Albumin loci from starch gel electrophoresis. alleles specific for cattle of Bos taurus and Bos indicus origin, and breed specific alleles were identified. The presense of CAf and CAz alleles in the populations studied confirms the presence of Zebu genes in the Pantaneiro cattle genome. The "Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuaria do Pantanal" EMBRAPA initiated a conservation nucleus herd of Pantaneiro cattle in the Nhecolandia region. This population, still maintains a considerable amount of genetic diversity compared to the European and Zebu breeds, althought a large part of its individuals may be homozygotes. Protein polymorphisms were successful in determining the genetic diversity of the Pantaneiro cattle. |
