A complete, rapidly performed necropsy on any carcass available should be the aim of any prosector. It roughly should consist of palpation and ex-amination of all external surfaces and membranes. Always lay the body on its left side and incise the right axilla, extending the incision cranially and caudally (incising the coxofemoral joint), reflecting the right limbs. The abdominal cavity is opened along the costal arch, the diaphragm cut, and the right rib cage removed with rib cutters (brush or tree cutters, or foot trimmers for lambs and kids); all viscera are examined. The stomach and intestines are removed by stripping them off the mesentery, or en toto if autolyzed, followed by the liver, adrenals, kidneys, bladder, and genitalia. Each is sectioned and examined as it is removed. The tongue, trachea, lung and heart are removed en masse; following this the tongue is sectioned, the thyroids are examined, and the esophagus and trachea are opened. The lungs are palpated and the bronchi opered. |
