A procedure for estimating septic tank drainfield size was developed to explicitly include the effects of climatic and soil variation on nitrogen pollution. For a given location, the method involves an iterative use of a nitrogen movement model for determining the minimum drainfield size without exceeding allowable N limits in groundwater. This procedure was then linked with a GIS for mapping spatial variation of drainfield size and estimating nitrogen pollution from septic tanks. Application of this methodology to a 1,894 Km² tropic island showed the importance of incorporating site variation in drainfield sizing. |
