Failure of seed of early ripening peach variets to germinate is well known and has been the subject of numerous investigations (2,16,19,20). Excision of the embryos and culture in aseptic medium was utilized by tukey to germinate such seed, first for sweet cherry (14) and then for other stone fruits, including peaches (17,18). He pointed out that the initial size of the embryo was the limiting factor in the ability of embryos to grow in artificial culture. Davidson (3,4) was able to grow early ripening peach varieties which would not germinate normally but reported that the earliest ripening varieties could not be grown with the methods used. Skirm (13) used culture methods to germinate interspecific Prunus crosses. Lammerts (8), workingmainly with later. |
