We investigated storage temperature, media and the effect of the fungicide (Emisan) on the storage life of Hopea parviflora seeds. H. parviflora trees flower during the last week of March to first week of April and fruits ripen by the end of May. Intense rainfall at the time of fruit ripening often induces vivipary of most of the seeds. At the time of shedding, seeds have a moisture content of 41% (wet weight basis) and 95% germination. Among the seed components, the embryo has highest moisture percentage. Moisture content, leachate conductivity and germination parameters declined rapidly with storage period irrespective of storage temperature. Dewinging did not have a significant influence on the germination parameters. Sand or neem cake were not appropriate storage media due to rapid decline in germination parameters after one week; the effect being more drastic in the neem cake. Germination was maintained while in storage in mud pots with or without sand medium. When seeds were treated with fungicide Emisan (1% a.i.) and stored at 10 C, 87% germination was obtained at the end of 40 days. Storing at 10 C without fungicide treatment resulted in the lowest germination percentage (18%). Fungicide treatment did not have any influence on the germination parameters of the seeds stored at 29 +- 1C, thus showing the palliative effect of the fungicide in preventing the chilling enjury of hopea seeds stored at 10 C. |
