This work presents qualitative and quantitative analyses of space-time shifts in alkaline lakes at Nhecolândia employing an ecological typology considering 1) lakes with floating/emergent macrophytes (MAC), 2) lakes with large amounts of cyanobacteria (CYAN), and 3) lakes with predominant heterotrophic metabolism in sediment microbial mats (MAT). The analysis was performed in SPRING GIS by processing one masked image per year (between June to August), composed of bands 3, 4 and 5 of the Landsat-5 TM from 1985 to 1998 by means of Principal Components Analysis followed by segmentation/supervised classification and Boolean Operations (LEGAL) for examining changes in classified pixels over time. Results indicate that the overall surface area of alkaline lakes in the region decreased. The relative area of MAC and MAT decreased while CYAN increased in the evaluated period. Proportionally, most of the changes of the MAC typology were likely related to dryness in the period (MAC to ?dry? land), and some areas of MAT turned to emergent/floating macrophytes, i.e., from the MAT to the MAC typology. Meanwhile some CYAN areas changed to MAC and MAT, most of the observed increase in CYAN areas was likely associated with the increase in nutrient levels. Ancillary data on water chemistry and greenhouse gases allowed inferences about possible biogeochemical dynamics of CYAN and MAC typologies and study of how the relative changes in the area of these change their methane and carbon dioxide exchanges with the atmosphere. Este trabalho apresenta análises qualitativa e quantitativa da mudança espaço-temporal dos lagos alcalinos na Nhecolândia empregando-se uma tipologia ecológica considerando 1) lagos com macrófitas flutuantes/emergentes (MAC), 2) lagos com grandes volumes de cianobactérias (CYAN), e 3) lagos com predomínio de metabolismo heterotrófico nos ?tapetes? bacterianos dos sedimentos (MAT). A análise foi feita no SIG SPRING ano a ano pelo processamento sob máscara (ou região de interesse) de bandas espectrais históricas 3,4 e 5 do Landsat-5 TM de 1985 a 1998 (uma cena por ano, entre junho e agosto), por Análise de Componentes Principais seguida de segmentação de imagens para classificação supervisionada e, finalmente, por Operações Booleanas (LEGAL) para avaliar os pixels classificados ao longo do tempo. Os resultados indicam diminuição da área superficial dos lagos alcalinos na região. A área relativa de MAC e MAT diminuiu e a de CYAN aumentou no período avaliado. Proporcionalmente, a maioria das mudanças em área de MAC foi relacionada com a estiagem neste período (MAC mudando para terra ?seca?), e a mudança na área de MAT foi associada à mudanças de MAT para MAC (aumento de macrófitas). Enquanto CYAN e MAC mudam eventualmente para MAT, a maioria das mudanças mostra um aumento das áreas CYAN associado ao aumento de nutrientes. Dados auxiliares de química da água e gases de efeito estufa permitiram inferir mecanismos biogeoquímicos de lagos CYAN e MAC e o papel da área relativa destes ambientes na troca de metano e dióxido de carbono com a atmosfera.
