This study had as objective to evaluate the genetic trends for preweaning (the direct and matemal effects) and postweaning gains in Zebu (Bos ihdicus) breeds. To achieve this objective it was utilized the archives containing the EPD'S from animals of five Zebu pure breeds, obtained from the 1996 version of the national Zebu sire evaluation. The genetic trends were calculated by the regression of the annual average EPD'S on animal birth year and were originated from a population of 53,123 Gir (Gr), 52,166 Guzerat (Gz), 23,570 Indubrazil (Id),423,174 Nellore (Nl) and 46,310 Tabapua (Tb) animals bom from 1961 through 1994. The regression analysis allowed the conclusion that there were positive genetic changes (P<0.05) on preweaning as well for postweaning gains for all breeds except for Gir's postweaning gain.It was also observed that the change in genetic merit for weight gain from birth through weaning had an important matemal genetic component. The regression coefficients obtained resulted in increments of 0.04, 0.01 and 0.005% (Gr); 0.03, 0.02 and 0.03% (Gz); 0.06, 0.01 and 0.09% (Id); 0. II, 0.10 and 0.09% (Nl); and 0.05, 0.02 and 0.08% (Tb) for preweaning (direct and matemal genetic effect) and for postweaning (direct genetic effect), daily gain respectively. The average daily pre and postweaning gains (g/day), were respectively, 504+ -128, 306+-134 (Gr); 565+-141, 305+-143 (Gz); 617+-155, 410+-165 (Id); 630+-130, 339+-140 (NI); and 662+- 117 , 334+- 139 (Tb). |
